La Leona Waterfall is one of the easiest adventures to reach in Guanacaste — it’s in the village of Curubandé, about 20 minutes from downtown Liberia and roughly 40 minutes from Liberia International Airport (LIR). That makes it a perfect first-day or last-day activity if you’re flying into or out of Liberia. Here’s exactly how to get there.
Where is La Leona Waterfall?
The tour meeting point is in Curubandé, Guanacaste (postal code 50105), next to Restaurante Mixcuac, at the foot of the Rincón de la Vieja Volcano. Because there are several similarly named spots in the area, always navigate to the official location pin and confirm your booking so a guide is expecting you.
Driving from Liberia (self-drive)
From Liberia, take Route 1 north for about 7 km, then turn right onto the road toward Curubandé / Rincón de la Vieja. Total drive is around 20 minutes. The road to the tour office is accessible with a regular car — a 4×4 is not required to reach the meeting point. There is free, safe on-site parking, so you can leave your belongings in the car (small lockers are also available).
Tip: GPS apps sometimes send visitors to the wrong “La Leona.” Use the Waze/Google pin from your booking confirmation and, if in doubt, message us on WhatsApp.
From Liberia Airport (LIR)
Liberia’s international airport is only a few minutes north of the city, so the drive to La Leona is about 40 minutes. Many travelers visit on arrival or departure day, with luggage stored safely during the tour.
Don’t want to drive? Transportation included
If you don’t have a rental car, we offer round-trip transportation — hotel, Airbnb or airport pickup in an air-conditioned vehicle, then back again after the tour. It’s the easiest option if you’re staying at the Guanacaste beaches or in Liberia. See transportation options.
Do you need a reservation?
Yes. A reservation guarantees a guide is ready at your chosen time. Walk-ins may wait 2–4 hours for the next available guide, so book ahead — especially in high season (December–April). Book your La Leona tour.
